Hello Betsy, and colleagues:
I’ve copied Scott Brown on this reply. Scott will succeed me as Dean of Students at Wabash on July 1. I am about to wrap up the 6th year of what was supposed to
be a one-year appointment. I’ll take a long-delayed sabbatical next academic year before returning to my happy place as a professor of German language and literature. I’ve loved the difference-making work of a Dean and have enjoyed collaborating with you all,
but I’m ready to turn my Worry Meter down quite a few notches for my remaining working years.
Many or most of you already know Scott from his time on point at Wooster. The Student Life team and I are working with him already to ensure a smooth transition. He will hit
the ground running here at Wabash, and I’m sure the ACM/GLCA group will be glad to once again benefit from his experience and insights.

Members of the Joint ACM/GLCA VP/Deans of Students Listserv group:
In past years, ACM and GLCA have provided support to bring this group together in person – often in Chicago – so that you all could continue to build the relationships with each other, talk with each other about current and pressing issues, learn from what
other campuses are doing, etc. A suggestion offered from one of the GLCA deans this year was to host this gathering adjoining the CIC CAO Institute.
From the CIC webpage: “CIC’s 2025 Institute for Chief Academic Officers invites chief academic officers, chief student affairs officers, and chief student success officers—including chief diversity officers; belonging, inclusion and culture officers; teaching
and learning center professionals; and career services professionals—to collaborate at a deeper level and program for a stronger future. The theme of this year’s Institute is
Building Places of Promise: Unlocking Student Success and will focus on uniting around our foundational values—mission, passion, and purpose—to create student-centered environments where students can thrive through resilience and belonging. The Institute
will address critical issues including navigating academic freedom, managing campus conflict, and preparing students for meaningful careers. CIC has planned concurrent sessions that bring the Institute’s themes and objectives together, as well as interactive
seminars that focus on campus free expression, civil discourse, student success, what happens when things go wrong, and sustaining wellness.”
In addition to many CSAOs possibly attending this Institute, it is being held in Indianapolis, so relatively “central” to our two consortiums. The institute usually starts late afternoon Saturday (November 1). So we thought it might work to have folks come
in the day before, have dinner together on Friday (October 31 … yes, that would be Halloween), and then meet on Saturday until the Institute is set to begin. CSAOs and deans who are not staying could return home that evening; others would stay for the institute.
The other option of course is to select a couple of days – we’ve usually met in early December – and a location (Chicago, Ann Arbor, one of our campuses, etc.) and meet then.
We’ve put together a brief (1-2 minute)
survey to gather your feedback on when/where to meet. If you could complete the survey by end of day on June 20, we would appreciate it.
