Good morning,

At Monmouth, students are allowed to stay for breaks. Like all of you, they need to register in the office of residence life.  Students are not charged during the fall and spring breaks. There is a weekly fee of $100 during the winter and summer breaks. Student can apply for funding to cover housing and meals. The cafeteria is not available during winter, spring, or summer breaks. The students stay in their own residence halls and have access to a full kitchen. They are provided with the campus and local food pantry options. For those students who do not have transportation, our arrangement with the local transportation service is still available to them during the academic year at no charge.

Hi all-

At Coe College, we do allow students to stay on campus over the winter break, but they must register with our office and pay a flat fee of $250. Students who are required to stay for any reason (athletics, employment, academics) are exempt from the fee. Students may apply for emergency financial support through our Student Support Fund. We do not have dining services open, but stock extra items in our food pantry and students can use our campus marketplace on days the college is open (only closed for Dec. 23-27, and Jan. 1). We also have local alumni and some faculty/staff who host dinners for students over the break.

Best,
Jason

Hi all,

At Grinnell, we do allow winter break housing for students who sign up in advance, and they are charged a flat rate of $895 that really covers their meal plan costs. Need-based aid is applied. We charge a flat rate as that was the only way we could support the dining services operation remaining open throughout the break. We do offer gap housing for the two days after the residence halls close and the two days prior to spring opening, which meets the needs of students requesting some reasonable flexibility.

Caution: External Email
At Earlham, we do not charge for those that register to stay for fall or spring break, but do for winter and summer. We have advertised a room charge of $20 per night for several years but have reduced that cost to $10 per night for the last couple of winters. It's $10 per night this winter, but we've told students to anticipate $20 in 2025.

We are unable to have dining services open over break with any consistency from year to year. In some winters, dining has been able to offer a lunch M-F, but we cannot rely on it. We give students information about local food pantry options, and we have a group of students working on a proposal to bring back a small food pantry on campus that we had available in partnership with our food service provider pre-2020.

Much like Wabash, we've moved to consolidating students for winter when it suits our needs, and students are told when they sign up that they should plan to be consolidated. Last year, we consolidated residence hall students to one currently empty building, but allowed apartment and house residents to remain in their respective assignments.

Subject: [ACM/GLCA Chief Student Affairs Officers] December Recess Housing/Dining for Students

Good afternoon,

I hope everyone has had a good fall semester. It is hard to believe the holidays are fast approaching!

I have several questions regarding the December recess:

  1. Do you provide housing and board/dining to students during the December recess?
  2. If so, do you charge and how much?
  3. How do you support students who stay on campus but cannot afford to pay the cost?
  4. Any other comments specific to these questions?

I would appreciate any thoughts you may have!

Thank you,

Ed
