Grinnell’s SGA used to have a significant rollover, and after years of accrual, the college decided to redirect those dollars to a Student Programming Board, which did not exist prior. Going forward, SGA won’t be permitted to carry a rollover to incentivize allocating their funds to directly serve the students who paid into the student activity fee that year. Unfortunately, the communication around this shift was not as clear as it should have been, which has led to some frustration and misguided anger towards the new programming board. We are working to correct false information now.

At Beloit we are similar to Carleton.  We allow it to accrue / rollover. It is placed into a different account each year that is overseen by our student government and student funding board.  Those monies are generally used for special projects.

Currently there are no written policies or guidelines in place.  There are conversations that have started.

When the GLCA VPSL's met virtually a few weeks ago, there was discussion of how we handle student activities fees and the rollover of any surplus at the end of a fiscal year. It sounded as though Allegheny was pretty much alone in allowing the rollover to accrue without any sort of cap or clawback. i..e, our student government has a pretty big year-to-year surplus!!

My question -- do you have statements or policies that you can share that govern this sort of situation because this is something we'd like to change for the next year. And do you keep the funds in your areas or do they drop to the bottom line for the College?

Thanks,

Ian
