Carleton is trying to reduce the number of fees we charge to students. One practice that departments are reluctant to give up is a fee for not attending a field trip or production for which they have signed up.
Ex1: Department purchases tickets for a play, covered by an endowed fund, and only half of the students sign up. The department charges the student for missing the trip and refunds the endowed account (otherwise free if they go).
Ex2: Career center organizes buses to a job fair in Minneapolis, not everyone shows up, and they charge the no-show students $10 (otherwise free if they go).
Do your campuses have non fee-based incentives for student participation or attendance? If so, could you share ideas?
